Today just has to be chalked off as one of those days!! We created enough chances to score a hat full of goals but couldn't put it away. We could have played until midnight and not actually scored. Even when we did score, it is the first time ever I have seen an own goal ruled out for offside!!??!!.
We didn't play at our best in the first half, but overall and for the second half performance we more than deserved something from this game. It just wasn't to be.
The only goal of the game, came mid way through the second half, when a boot out from Alex Fulford, was volleyed back into the box and perfectly for the stiker to be one on one to finish.
Tough luck for the boys today. Finishing next on the training schedule :). For being the architect of a lot that was good in midfield, our player of the match is Ehren Wintle.
COUNTY CUP RD3: Longlevens 1-10 Churchdown Panthers Whites
Sunday 3rd December 2017
This county cup tie turned out to be a lot more one sided than was expected ahead of the game. It was a heavy pitch which made the football a bit difficult at times.
Panthers were in front in the first minute. Kye Brice pinched the ball off the defence and put Kian Gardiner in. Kian's shot was well saved, but Kye had continued his run and was rewarded with a tap in. However, on 12 minutes, Longlevens got level. A ball over the top was expertly lifted over Alex Fulford coming off his line. On 22 minutes, Panthers got back in front. An effort from Ethan Dunbar turned into a great pass for Kian Gardiner to smash home. Then 2 minutes later, Ethan Dunbar broke free of the defence and saw his shot saved, only for Jaydon Lehal to turn in from the rebound. Then 4 minutes later, another mazy run by Ethan Dunbar saw him felled in the box. Ethan picked himself up to take the penalty, but it was well saved by the Longlevens keeper.
What a response to the half time team talk. They came out firing and found the net 4 times in the first 6 minutes! First Jon Whiting released Jakub Kroliczak who put Ethan Dunbar through 1 on 1 to finish. Then Kye Brice cut in from the right and fed Jon Whiting to finish. Then Jon Whiting turned provider with a ball over the top for Tom Whiteside to finish. And finally Jakub Kroliczak on the left, played an excellent slide rule pass for Ethan Dunbar to again finish from a 1 on 1.
The game was won by then, and the play dropped off a bit, but we added more goals. On 65 minutes, Jon Whiting curled a free kick right into the top corner. On 72 minutes Jon Whiting played in Cameron Thornton who beat one, then found the corner. And on 76 minutes an excellent through ball from Jaydon Lehal, allowed Tom Whiteside to round the keeper and finish.
Panthers didn't play as well as they can in the first half, but came out firing for the second. A deserved win, and could have been a few more. For his considerable number of efforts in front of goal, our player of the match is Kian Gardiner :).
DIVISION 1: Churchdown Panthers Whites 6-0 FC Lakeside
Sunday 26th November 2017
Back in league action for the first time in over a month, and great to see a positive response to the disappointment of last week in the cup. We played some good football, and despite a few dodgy moments in the first half, were always the better team, and just needed to be patient for the goals to come.
The only goal of the first half, came in just the 5th minute. Kian Gardiner's ball forward was cut out by the defence, but the pass back to the keeper was pounced on by Kye Brice who finished well. Despite creating a number of other chances, the only other key highlight in the first half was in our penalty box. Daniel Clayton was judged to have pushed a player, however, the resultant penalty was well saved by Alex Fulford, who was also alert to get up quickly and save the effort from the rebound.
We won the game with 2 quick goals a quarter way through the second half. On 53 minutes, a Jonathan Whiting corner, was nodded in by Ethan Dunbar, then a minute later, Kian Gardiner outpaced the defence on the left and his cross fell to Kye Brice to drill under the keeper. We then added a further 3 goals in 6 minutes a little while later. On 62 mins, a deep cross from Aidan Limbird was headed in at the back post by Kye Brice for his hatrick. On 67 minutes, Jakub Kroliczak put Ethan Dunbar away and he cut in and fired home. Then on 68 miniutes, a Cameron Thornton slide rule pass was neatly finished by Jaydon Dix.
Good performances all over the pitch. A solid midfield again, and for considerable effort in that part of the pitch, our player of the match is Ethan Dunbar.
LEAGUE CUP QF: Leckhampton Rovers Lions 2-0 Churchdown Panthers Whites
Sunday 19th November 2017
It is of course disappointing to see the end of one cup run. However, the pleasing thing to take from today is that Panthers were the only team trying to play good football.
Leckhampton scored 2 first half goals, which is the first time this season we have conceeded in the first half!! It took just 2 minutes for them to create a tap in for the first, and then 19 minutes in they scored again, on the break from our own attack.
We again struggled for a bit of tempo today, and wanted to take too many touches in the wrong areas of the pitch, giving up posession a bit too often. But when we did play, it was good, and we were competitive in the challenge. An injury to Tom Whiteside in the first couple of minutes did not do much to help! The most consistent players today, and doing a great job covering the defence when needed, our player of the match is Jon Whiting.
Onward and upward. Stuff to work on in training, but reasons to be proud of the effort.
LEAGUE CUP RD2: Churchdown Panthers Whites 5-0 Churchdown Panthers Reds
Sunday 12th November 2017
Despite scoring an early goal, Whites were a bit slow to get going today and find a rythym. But the last 10 minutes of the first half and throughout the second half, we played some really good stuff. We were not made to play at a high tempo, but what we did, we did effectively.
The early goal was on 3 minutes. A Jon Whiting corner, was headed clear but into the path of Daniel Clayton who found the roof of the net from 25 yards. Whites were unable to add to the goal until 31 minutes in. Jakub Kroliczak played Aidan Limbird in behind the defence and he crossed for Tom Whiteside to finish. Then with 5 minutes of the half left, some great simple passing on the left created space for Jon Whiting. Anna Barnes played it in for Jon, who turned and also fired into the roof of the net.
The game was wrapped up 5 minutes into the second half. A Jon Whiting corner fell to Jakub Kroliczak in the box, to smash in from close range. Then 8 minutes later a Jon Whiting cross was headed back into the box by Jakub Kroliczak for Ethan Dunbar to convert on the half volley. We created plenty more chances to add to the goals, but it didn't quite happen. Still a job well done.
The midfield trio of Jaydon Dix, Cameron Thornton and Jon Whiting were excellent today. For keeping the game simple, recognising when he needed to cover defenders, and working well at finding space to receive the ball, our player of the match is Jaydon Dix.
GFA COUNTY CUP RD 2: Fairford & Lechlade 1-7 Churchdown Panthers Whites
Sunday 5th November 2017
Some spells of great football from us today, good quick passing and creating plenty of chances.
It took just one minute to open our account. A volleyed ball over the top by Cameron Thornton was taking in hs stride by Ethan Dunbar, finishing when 1 on 1. The lead was extended on 14 minutes. A Jakub Kroliczak corner was nodded in by Kian Gardiner. Then on 21 minutes, Kian Gardiner used pace down the left to get to the byline and smash the ball across goal, for Tom Whiteside to finish at the back stick.
We were a bit slow to get going in the second half and Fairford were the better team for the first 10 minutes. Early in the second half, they also scored. We lost possession in midfield, and as the defense stepped out, left room behind for a 1 on 1 which was converted. But we wrapped the game up in 2 minutes around the quarter hour mark. First an Aidan Limbird ball behind the defence for Ethan Dunbar was cut back to Jaydon Dix on the edge of the area, to fire a debut goal in off the post. Then Jon Whiting fed Kian Gardiner on the right hand side and a deep cross was headed in by Ethan Dunbar.
On 23 minutes of the second half, Kian Gardiner challenged for a ball which as a result broke for Ethan Dunbar to convert a 1 on 1 and complete his hat trick. Then with 10 minutes left, a Jakub Kroliczak corner was cleared to Aidan Limbird on the edge of the area, who caught hold of a great half volley to conclude the scoring.
Good work in spells, a few things to work on, but generally a good day at the office and a deserved win. For his work rate, goal and 3 assists (even if Terry says he can't claim the last one ;)), our player of the match was Kian Gardiner.
DIVISION 1: FC Lakeside 0-3 Churchdown Panthers Whites
Sunday 8th October 2017
Another week with the team stretched for numbers. Special mentions to Elliot Whitfiled who made a star appearance outfield (almost converting an overhead sissor kick volley :)) and to Kye Brice, playing despite still recovering from a knee injury.
We were not at our best in the first half, but still created a few chances to score, while remaining solid at the back. Amoung the chances was a penalty for Ed Leech, who after winning it, unfortunatley saw his effort from the spot saved, by a keeper who played well for Lakeside.
The football in the second half was much better, and the movement we talked about at half time got us the first goal 5 minutes in. Tom Whiteside played an angled ball from the middle of the park, for Kian Gardiner on the left to drive in at goal. His effort was saved, but Ethan Dunbar was brightest in the area, to turn in the rebound. Then just a minute later, Aidan Limbird picked up in midfield and fed in to Ethan Dunbar who beat the last man and finished well. It took until the 68th minute to score again. Ethan Dunbar completed his hat-trick after finding space at the back post from an Aidan Limbird corner.
Clear improvement in the second half, and a deserved win in the end, even though we had to be patient. For doing a job in midfield that he didn't want to do, yet still bagging a hat-trick, our MOM is Ethan Dunbar.
GFA COUNTY CUP RD1: Churchdown Panthers Whites 3-2 Leckhampton Rovers Lions
Sunday 1st October 2017
The level of effort from every single player today was outstanding. We needed a big game and they all brought it.
Having held off some early Leckhampton pressure, Panthers took the lead on 14 minutes, when a Jon Whiting ball over the top was expertly controlled and finished in off the post by Ethan Dunbar. Then in the last minute of the first half we got a deserrved second. Jon Whiting was again the provider from a free kick, which fell to Ed Leech to hit low into the back of the net.
With only 12 players against a strong physical side with a full compliment of substitues, took a herculean effort on our part. 15 minutes into the 2nd half and Leckhampton were back in it. After Panthers giving up possession in midfield, a long shot came back off the bar and fell to the only player to react at the far post, and turn it in. However, we got our 2 goal advantage back just 5 minutes later. Jon Whiting again with a ball into the box, which Anna Barnes set for Ed Leech to finish for his second. Then we ended up with a nervy last 10 minutes, after a speculative punt from a Leckhampton player in midfield, held up in the wind, and dropped over Alex Fulford in goal.
It is so difficult to single any one player out today, for man of the match. They all played with passion. But for his 2 goals, the honour this week goes to Ed Leech.
LEAGUE CUP RD1: Churchdown Panthers Whites 12-1 Slimbridge Spartans
Sunday 24th September 2017
This fixture was a complete mis-match against lower league opposition, that could have been an even worse score had we not cut the game short, and supported our opposition in the second half. Story of the first half....
4 mins - Jacob Krolicazak deep cross to Tom Whiteside who set the ball for Harry Staddon to fire in across the keeper.
5 mins - Harry Staddon played a good ball in for Ethan Dunbar to score.
10 mins - Jon Whiting picks the ball up in midfield and dinks it over the defence for Ethan Dunbar to round the keeper and score.
13 mins - Harry Staddon cross is converted by Ethan Dunbar for his hat-trick.
14 mins - Harry Staddon through ball for Ethan Dunbar to net his 4th.
26 mins - Jon Whiting switches play for Jakub Kroliczak who cuts inside and scores.
31 mins - Tom Whiteside collects the ball, turns and plays a slide rule pass for Jazton Juico to finish.
37 mins - Ben Murphy finds Kian Gardiner who shifts onto his left foot and drills home.
40 mins - Ethan Dunbar turns provider for Jakub Kroliczak to net his second.
After spending most of half time chatting to a dejected opposition we decided to change things up. Our forwards went in defence and vice versa. We agreed to retreat to half way to let them play out, and we allowed them to field 12 players. The referee also stopped the game on 65 minutes with agreement from both parties.
47 mins - Dan Clayton on the edge of the area finds Ben Murphy to crash a shot home.
59 mins - Ben Murphy crosses for Alex Fulford who controls with his chest, plays keepy-up to turn and then volley the ball home.
60 mins - A break by the opposition and they get on the scoresheet!!
61 mins - Pretty much from kick off, Tom Whiteside and Alex Fulford play a few 1-2s to progress through the middle of the park, before Alex nets number 12.
It is not easy coaching a game like this. We made some right choices for 2nd half, but that of course means that we don't get to play how we are supposed to. Still, we were clinical in the first half, and moved the ball about well.
